Continuing my horror movie fan art month because I am a huge wimp and must force myself to watch horror movies, today I watched the 1971 film, “Let’s Scare Jessica to Death”.
My co-worker, Dick Grunert (who gave me the list of his 13 must see horror films for this month’s horror sketch-off) had the following to say about the film: “I remember this movie scaring the bejezus outta me when I was kid, so as excited as I was when it was finally released on dvd a couple of years ago, I was afraid that the movie just wouldn’t hold up. But boy, does it ever! This quiet, haunting film really gets under your skin. They sure don’t make horror movies like this anymore, and it’s a damn shame.”
This one had me really excited…title alone filled my brain with possibilities! As the film started, a young woman fresh out of a mental institution, moving to a new and strange town with her friends, I eagerly awaited the other character’s evil machinations come together as they attempt to “Scare Jessica to Death” and it never happened. I’m still not quite sure what the title is referring to, quite honestly. Ultimately I think my overactive imagination killed this one for me, as the payoff could never live up to what I was hoping for in my mind.
Next up: Texas Chainsaw Massacre!
